RE: just curious, where to, and why? ~Naomi Deskroterakol 14.May.03 05:45 PM a Web browser Domino Server 6.0.1Windows 2000
Open source tools. If IBM's direction bottles me into expensive J2EE solutions that require monumental development efforts and complex methodologies, (as differentiated from my old approaches of deploying applications on a weekly basis in Domino) then I might as well be using the open source platforms that don't cost me a cent.
NextGen mail? Great, I can take Tomcat, Samba, MySQL and Linux and whip up a solution for $1/user instead of $10. Sure, I lose integrated C&S, end-to-end encryption, mobile user support, enterprise directory integration and distributed architecture, but hey... NextGen doesn't have any of that either. So IBM is telling me those capabilities aren't important.
Open standard technology is all fine and good, but when you shift your customer base into designing their business processes on those, you commoditize your products. There are a dozen J2EE solutions on the market. There's only one Domino.
